The new logo for the Brooklyn Nets had all the right ideas going for it but I felt that the final design really lacked in execution, almost looking as if it were unfinished. I’ve been reading various design blogs and forums and the general response from the design community is underwhelming. Bobby Solomon of The Fox Is Black put it perfectly in this write up earlier this week.
So, along with all the other designers out there having a go (this one from a while back is wicked), here are two ‘tweaked’ versions of the new logo I did just for fun. A little bit of consideration regarding the scale of things and their spacing within the shield gives everything a bit more room to breath. The top arc of the shield has been straightened out producing a stronger shape. ‘Brooklyn’ has been incorporated into the top of the shield above ‘Nets’ so that it now makes sense when you read it. And for the word ‘Nets’ I decided to go with a font reminiscent of an earlier Nets design from the 70s to keep ties with its roots.
As you can see it’s not that much different from the actual design, but a few changes here and there can radically change the look and feel of the final product.
Now that that’s all said and done I wanna wish the new team in Brooklyn all the best and fingers crossed you guys get Dwight Howard!!

Finally framed the FreeDarko Bird & Magic print that I bought waaay back in June! Spent all day looking for a big enough frame, going to all the frame stores only to find them all closed for the holidays and all the regular stores didn’t have frames big enough. But I eventually found one in Target and it was a perfect fit!

Got this in the mail the other day from the great Freedarko. Can’t wait to get it framed and up on my wall! My first ever ‘art print’ too, with hopefully more to come. You can still see the other prints that were on offer here, but unfortunately everything is now sold out. Would’ve loved to have get my hands on the Jordan and Barkley ones too but they were sold out long before I ordered the Bird/Magic piece.

Closing down sale at The FreeDarko Imperial Outlet, 30% off everything! If you like hoops and art it’s definitely worth checking out. Ordered myself a sweet Bird & Magic print. First ever ‘art print’ I’ve ever bought too!

I remember watching this finals series as a young lad. I may be wrong but I think it was the last NBA season to be televised on free-to-air Australian television, way before the revolution that is digital tv and it’s dedicated sports channel. Shaq vs Hakeem, what a match up. I remember being in love with the Magic and wanting them to win so badly. Who knows what Shaq’s career would have been like had they won. I certainly don’t think he’d have played for three different teams in the space of three seasons.
